Parent Governor Election 2017

I am writing to you to invite you to stand for election as a parent governor, or nominate another parent to do so. In our school we have provision for three parent governors and we will shortly have one vacancy.
The governing body, with the Head Teacher, has overall responsibility for the running of the school. Governing bodies have three core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

No special qualifications are needed and the most important thing is to have a keen interest in the school and be prepared to play an active part in the Governing Body’s work. Training is available for all governors and this governing body has an expectation that those new to being a governor attend free induction training. All parents & carers with parental responsibility are entitled to stand as a parent governor. However, as required by OFSTED and DfE, our Governing Body has recently carried out a skills audit, and would particularly welcome nominations from parents with the following:

  • Experience in an HR capacity
  • Experience of premises / facilities management
  • In addition, the core skills required of a governor at Little Sutton Primary School are:
  • An interest in education
  • Appropriate availability
  • Good communication/interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • A commitment to participate in governor training
  • A desire to support the school

For your information, please click here for a summary of the circumstances under which someone cannot serve as a governor and the nomination form to be completed. Also parents/carers who have paid employment in the school for 500 or more hours per academic year or who are elected members of the Local Authority are not eligible to stand in these elections. Nominations must be from parents or carers with children at the school on the day that nominations close.
If you would like to stand for election please complete the nomination form overleaf and return it to the school no later than 5pm on Monday 18th September 2017. You may also include a short personal statement to support your nomination and it would be helpful if this could make reference to any experience in the two core skills listed above. This will ensure that parents are able to make an informed decision in the event of a ballot.
Self-nominations will be accepted, but if you are nominating another parent please seek their prior consent. If there are more nominations than vacancies the election will be by secret ballot. If that is necessary, voting papers will be sent to all parents together with details of the ballot procedure.
If you are interested in finding out more, please contact me on 464 4494 and I will be delighted to arrange an informal chat with one of our governors.
