The week started with everyone baking gingerbread men on Monday! The children loved the activity and there was lots of sequencing/following of instructions and opportunities for measuring and weighing. We hope that they enjoyed eating them as much as they enjoyed baking them!
We have also worked on subtraction using storytelling with the Gingerbread Man. The children told stories involving ‘First, Then and Now’ to work out how many were left on the baking tray. We used the vocabulary ‘minuend, subtrahend and difference’ – the children should be able to explain these words to you! They were fantastic mathematicians and they did so well with recording the resulting number sentences.
On Tuesday, we carried out lots of different experiments involving gingerbread men. We made predictions and investigated lots of different scenarios. What would happen if the gingerbread man swam through a river of milk, water, oil, vinegar or cola? What happens to him if we place ice on his tummy? Would he be better off swimming through a warm or cold river? Can we put him back together again? The children had great fun with our different experiments and made some great predictions and observations.
We have also taken delivery of our next visitors, linked to our work on life-cycles. We are now proud caterpillar-sitters! Hopefully, over the coming days we should be able to watch their amazing metamorphosis into beautiful butterflies! We look forward to being able to release our new butterflies into the local area.
Reception enjoyed time with their Y4 Buddies, as it was time (unbelievably) to meet our new Reception children on Thursday afternoon. We can’t believe that it is that time of year again! It seems to come round faster each year!
Homework – Please continue to work through the allocated books on Bug Club. We have reallocated books to each child and have had a look at their work so far. Some children have read an impressive amount of books and have completed the related activities. Some children are yet to log on! We will be tracking activity over the coming weeks. Please continue with learning and practising Tricky Words – both reading and writing. We will be beginning to collect in all home reading books and Reading Diaries next week.
