Happy New Year to you all! Reception have had a fantastic first week back. The children have truly thrown themselves back into school routines – we are very proud teachers!
Our week began with an exciting assembly introducing the focus book for our whole school Literacy project: Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne.
After hearing and discussing the story, Reception visited Harvestfields Park where we explored the different areas of the park and observed the visitors walking their dogs and sitting on the benches, just like in the story!
In Literacy, we used our phonics skills to write thought bubbles and speech bubbles for the character Charles and his Mum. In Mathematics, we explored and created our own tessellations, inspired by Anthony Browne’s fantastic illustrations. We then went on to explore the science behind shadows; discussed the feelings experienced by the characters at different stages of the story; and drew on our own experiences of the park to relate to the characters.
Our sounds of the week have been ai, ee and igh. Our rhyme of the week has been Polly and Sukey.
Next week, we will continue our work on Voices in the Park. We will be learning the sounds: ar (as in car), oo/OO (as in book and moon) and ur (as in hurt). Our rhyme of the week will be Old Mother Hubbard.
