Little Sutton Primary School Year 6 Curriculum Plan
Welcome back to another year at Little Sutton Primary School. We hope you enjoyed the summer holidays and we look forward to working with you and your child this year.
These curriculum notes are intended to give you an idea of the topics your child will be studying during the Autumn term. We have also written a reminder with regards to dinner money, medication and equipment needed in school. Details with regards to homework are also included.
We hope that these notes will enable you to support your child with the work they are carrying out at school by providing them with opportunities to extend their knowledge of the subjects. We would also appreciate you supporting them to complete homework to a high standard and return it on time as well as ensuring they have all the equipment they will need.

Area and perimeter
To begin with the children will be exploring and writing biographies and autobiographies. They will be studying Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’, exploring playscripts and visual representations. Through the study and reading of Kensuke’s Kingdom, the children will be looking at persuasive writing, letters, diary entries, reports, balanced arguments, and also newspaper reports later in the year.
Living things and their habitats (Microbes and classification) Electricity
Use of search engines, mapping programmes and websites for geographical research.
Explore interactive models of climate change
Creating adventure games
Using maps, atlases, globes and digital computer mapping locate countries and describe features Human Geography: settlements, land use, economic activity including trade links, distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water. Independent study.
Use sketch books to create, communicate, explore, investigate, make and evaluate. Techniques to create effect: clay, paint, charcoal, pencils. Work will be linked to other curriculum areas.
Pizzas – designing and making.
Rugby, hockey, gymnastics.
Rhythm, melody and harmony, learn the recorder and collectively develop musicianship through instruments and voice.

Please can you ensure your child has the following equipment in school
Berol Handwriting pen or fountain pen.
These, and other items, may be borrowed from school if they are forgotten. Ink erasers, biros and tippex in any form are not allowed. Please also ensure all uniform, PE kits, bags etc are named.
Monday Spelling and times tables
Each piece of homework is expected to take about 30 minutes to complete. Maths will be differentiated by sets and literacy & spelling in groups. Homework is usually due in one week after it has been set. Reading may also be set but if not then children are expected to read their own material independently. There may also be some French homework some weeks. Homework follows DfES guidelines and may be in a variety of forms including practical activities which may need some adult support. If you feel your child is getting too little or too much homework please come in and see us.
Dinner Trips/ Clubs money etc
Dinner Money is £11.25 per week and should be paid for on ParentPay. Details for trips and clubs etc are sent out separately but will generally be paid for through ParentPay unless otherwise specified. If you do not have access to ParentPay yet please ask for details at the office or, send correct amount by cheque or cash in a named envelope.
Please ensure that inhalers and/or relevant medicines are in school and in date.
Please avoid booking medical appointments etc. next May due to SATs tests. SATs will take place during the week commencing 14th May 2018
Children will need their PE kits for Tuesday and Wednesday and we would prefer children to bring their kit on a Monday and take it home for washing on a Friday.
On a Friday afternoon, while the Y6 staff use time for planning, preparation and assessment, the children will enjoy one hour of French and one hour of PE.
