Welcome back to the last term at Little Sutton Primary School for this academic year. We hope you enjoyed the Easter holiday.
These curriculum notes are intended to give you an idea of the topics your child will be studying during the Summer term. We have also written a reminder with regards to dinner money, medication and equipment needed in school. Details with regards to homework are also included.
We hope that these notes will enable you to support your child with the work they are carrying out at school by providing them with opportunities to extend their knowledge of the subjects. We would also appreciate you supporting them to complete homework to a high standard and return it on time as well as ensuring they have all the equipment they will need.
Below is an overview of all the subjects and topics your child will be covering in the Summer term.
Topics covered will include addition and subtraction of decimals, geometry, measures, angles, position and direction as well as shape property.
We will cover a range of fiction and non-fiction texts including visual literacy using ‘The Piano’, play scripts, drama and explanation texts based on our science topic on plants.
The unit of work begins with Living Things. The children will learn about the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, birds, insects and plants. We will also be keeping a live butterfly hatching kit in Year 5 to support our work on life cycles. A trip to the Botanical Gardens has been arranged and details will be sent out shortly. After half term our Science focus will move on to puberty and pregnancy gestation of other animals compared to humans.
The focus this term will be learning about Sutton Coldfield. The study will encompass both human and physical features, the distribution of resources, land use as well as shops and services.
We will be studying Maya history and culture. We will also be covering Anglo Saxons in this term.

PE –Tuesday & Friday
Football, cricket, rounders, athletics and gymnastics.
Could we remind you to label all PE kit as well as items of uniform as we always have many un-named items at the end of each half term.
We appear to have a number of children who consistently arrive for lessons without either pen or pencil. We are sure that it is pure carelessness on their part, but could you possibly check that they have a pen (either rollerball or handwriting pen) and a pencil each week. Maybe spending pocket money on these items would ensure they are carefully looked after! (It’s worth a try anyway!)
Homework continues to be given in both literacy and maths and displayed on the website on a weekly basis.
Dinner money, trips etc
We ask that you pay for trips and dinner money via ParentPay wherever possible, if you are unable to do this then please put money in an envelope with your child’s name and the amount enclosed on the front. Please note that the cost of a school meal is £2.40 per day.
Please ensure that inhalers and/or relevant medicines are in school and in date.
On a Wednesday afternoon, while the Y5 staff use time for planning, preparation and assessment, the children will enjoy one hour of French and one hour of Art.
