Year 1 update – 9th September

Welcome back! We hope you all had a restful and refreshing summer holiday.

The routine for homework is as follows:

Spellings – Handed out on Monday and tested on the following Monday. The first set of spellings will be handed out next week and are as follows:

tail, right, curl, town, foot

These spellings will be tested on Monday 20th September.

Please can the children NOT practise in their red spelling books. These are brought home with a sticker at the back in order for your child to practise on a separate piece of paper.

Reading – Reading books are swapped once a week on a Tuesday. Your child will be bringing home their first reading book on Tuesday 21st September. Details about any targets we set will always be recorded in your child’s reading record.

P.E. – The children will be taught one hour of P.E. every Wednesday. Please ensure that your child’s P.E. kit is in school on this day.

On Friday, the children will be bringing home a target pack to make you aware of the expectations for Year 1. As part of this pack, the children will be given a Reading Challenge booklet. This is to encourage the children to read widely at home. Once they have read a book beginning with each letter of the alphabet, the children will earn a reading challenge badge and entry into an end of year prize draw. Reading Challenge books will be changed every fortnight on a Friday, and so the children should return their book to school on this day.

Finally, a couple of polite requests. Firstly, please could you ensure your child goes to the toilet before coming to school in a morning so that their learning is minimally disrupted. Secondly, please can we also ask you not to put water bottles in book bags to avoid any damage to reading books.

Thank you for your support – we look forward to a great year!
