YR Update Week Beginning Monday 16th May 2022

This week, Reception will be continuing their work on ‘Look Up!’ by the author Nathan Bryon. We will continue with letter writing to invite a friend to watch the meteor shower, designing and labelling spacesuits, writing simple sentences based on the book’s illustrations and a variety of creative activities linked to the text.

During Maths, we will be thinking all about the composition of ten and linking this to both ten frames and die frames.  We will be watching and discussing the Numberblocks episode ‘Ten again’ and practising lots of different ways of making ten. We will also be trying to record our work in a variety of different ways e.g. part/whole diagrams, ten frames, number sentences etc.

We will continue our work on Holidays – Past and Present, Growing and The Wide World.

Our ‘Rhyme of the Week’ will be ‘Ten Green Bottles’ – this will link nicely to our maths work! Please practise this at home and encourage your child to think about how many bottles have fallen and how many are still standing. You could even act out the rhyme with props!

During phonics this week, we will be practising reading and writing longer words and recapping on sounds taught so far. The children will continue with their normal Reading Practise sessions and Reading Challenge books will be changed on Friday as usual. Please ensure that your child has their Reading Folder with them in school at all times.  Tricky words taught this week will be added to word tubs on Friday.

Homework will be sent in Homework folders on Wednesday and need to be returned the following Monday. This week, we will be having a maths focus.

We are very much looking forward to an exciting ‘Arts Week’ next week. Any contributions of clean plastic lids/tops of any colour/size would greatly appreciated for some of our projects, for example, lids from milk, juice cartons, toothpaste, deodorants, fruit pouches etc.. Also, cardboard tubes, small cardboard boxes and any items we can use for junk modelling and transient art. We will be visiting Walsall Art Gallery on Thursday – letters have been sent home regarding the trip but please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries.

Many thanks for your continued support,

The Reception Team
